Description
SS-31 Vial — Mitochondrial-Targeted Peptide for Bioenergetics Research (10mg)
What is SS-31?
SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a synthetic tetrapeptide (D-Arg-dimethylTyr-Lys-Phe-NH₂) engineered to selectively target the inner mitochondrial membrane. Its alternating basic and aromatic amino acid structure enables it to concentrate within mitochondria — the organelles responsible for cellular energy production.
The peptide binds to cardiolipin, a phospholipid unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane that is essential for the structural organisation of the electron transport chain. By stabilising cardiolipin, SS-31 is studied for its effects on mitochondrial bioenergetics, reactive oxygen species production and mitochondrial dynamics.
Mechanism of Research Interest
- Cardiolipin Binding: Interacts with cardiolipin to stabilise the inner mitochondrial membrane and preserve electron transport chain integrity.
- Mitochondrial Targeting: The peptide’s sequence design enables selective accumulation within mitochondria — a key feature in targeted delivery research.
- ROS Modulation: Studied for effects on mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production under stress conditions.
- Bioenergetic Studies: Research examines impact on ATP synthesis efficiency and mitochondrial respiration rates.
Research Applications
- Mitochondrial bioenergetics research
- Cardiolipin-membrane interaction studies
- Oxidative stress and ROS biology
- Mitochondrial-targeted peptide design

Reconstitution Guidelines
For experienced laboratory personnel only. This lyophilised powder must be reconstituted with bacteriostatic water prior to research use.
- Allow the vial to equilibrate to room temperature (15–25°C) before reconstitution.
- Wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab and allow it to dry.
- Using a sterile syringe, add the required volume of Bacteriostatic Water by injecting slowly down the inner wall of the vial — do not aim the stream directly at the lyophilised cake.
- Gently swirl the vial until the powder is fully dissolved. Do not shake vigorously, as this can denature the peptide.
- Visually inspect the reconstituted solution — it should be clear and free of particulate matter.
- Store reconstituted solutions at 2–8°C and use within the timeframe defined in your research protocol. Discard any unused solution after the recommended period.
